Kampf um die Stadt
Julian Warner / Veronika MaurerDescription
In “Kampf um die Stadt” (battle for the city), cultural struggle is turning into class struggle again. Whether in Munich, Paris, Vienna, Tokyo or New York: the rents are too high! The real estate market is dominated by the law of the strongest, Michael Buffer could shout out.
Global corporations are buying up entire neighbourhoods, tenants are being thrown out and driven from their homes. Housing is no longer a right, but a commodity. But who faces the social issues of our times? Who is to blame for the day to day misery? Greedy landlords or rich hipsters? Idle governments or drag queens?
Things get serious in “Kampf um die Stadt”. Be there when the ordinary people free themselves from the clutches of the right-wing demagogues and put the ideology of the market into a headlock! In “Kampf um die Stadt”, six professional wrestlers compete individually and in tag teams. Wrestling is martial arts, choreography and spectacle. With whirling bodies, music, acting and slapstick interludes, wrestling in “Kampf um die Stadt” is a lustful form of dialectical theatre that exposes the contradictions of our latecapitalist present.
Julian Warner alias Fehler Kuti and Veronika Maurer, responsible, among other projects, for the Brechtfestival Augsburg until 2025, have for years been playfully crossing the boundaries between decolonial critique, avantgarde stage productions and sport as spectacle and mass phenomenon.
